Obituary
Vernon Jowayne “Joe” Stone, age 73, of Ashland City, Tennessee, passed away on Thursday, February 16, 2023, at The Residence at Alive Hospice in Nashville, Tennessee after a long and difficult battle against cholangiocarcinoma. Joe was born August 11, 1949, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, to the late Vernon and Katherine (Lyons) Stone. Joe had a life-long interest in the natural world, attained a degree in Zoology from UTK and became an avid birder in his twenties. He was a life member of Tennessee Ornithological Society and participated in annual nationwide Audobon Bird Counts in the Chattanooga area for many years, later in middle and west Tennessee, including Reelfoot Lake. He retired from a career as a salesman.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Phyllis Stone Powers; and special aunt, Ava Lyons Robinson. He is survived by his wife, Janie (Legg) Stone; daughters, Joanna and Marissa; granddaughters, Jane Howse and Josie Stone; adopted son, Brian Howse; adopted daughters, Svenja, Meghan, Kristy, and Karla; nieces, Sandi (Eddie) Tinsley and Christi (Brad) Madewell; nephew, Tommy (Amanda) Varnell; cousin, David “Skip” (Connie) Robinson; great-nieces and nephews, Shellie, Jake, Abbie, Brady and Katherine; many cousins; and chosen brothers, Daniel (Kathy) Jacobson and Jerry (Beverly) Drewry. Burial is Saturday, February 25, 2023 at 2:00pm in the Larkspur Conservation and Burial Grounds. Larkspur Conservation: Tennessee's Conservation and Natural Burial. A Celebration of Life for Joe will be Saturday, March 11, 2023, at 2pm at Ashland City Free Will Baptist Church, 100 West Elm Street, Ashland City, Tennessee 37015.
