Obituary

Age 87, passed away March 18 of congestive heart failure. Edna left this life with the cacophony of the birds of early spring and was taken away in a passing storm with the wailing of tornado sirens. Born December 1, 1925 in Atlanta, moved to Knoxville at age 5 after the passing of her father. Proud graduate of Knoxville High '44, UT (Delta Zeta), and Peabody Graduate School. Beloved art teacher at Hillsboro HS and later Whites Creek. Survived by son Thomas Walter who cared for her during her final years and daughter, Liz Nugent and her husband, Francisco, and their children, Francis, Gabriela, and Fiona, all of Bethesda, MD. Edna, an accomplished artist, saw beauty in art, literature, science, music, religion, and especially in nature. She adored being with people and spent her life in an active quest of learning. At Edna's request, her body was donated to Vanderbilt Medical School. A celebration of her life will be held in June. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: UT Foundation (for student scholarships for the School of Art), UT, Gift Records Office, 600 Henley St., Ste B-028, Knoxville, TN 37996.
